In the heart of El Segundo, public art has always played a critical role in inspiring residents and transforming spaces. Among its most captivating works is the Fox mural, brought to life on Grand Avenue by celebrated artist Bunnie Reiss. Known for her cosmic, magical scenes and deep connection to nature, Bunnie’s art channels storytelling through vibrant colors, patterns, and a playful, almost mystical energy. The fox became an emblem of wonder, possibility, and the intersection of community lore and creative imagination.
But "The Fox" didn't stay confined to paint and wall. This mural became the launching pad for something new: art that leaps off static surfaces and enters the digital, interactive realm. Reality Experience Design, an Augmented Reality (AR) company, partnered with the El Segundo Art Walk (ESAW), the city of El Segundo, and Snap Inc. to make El Segundo an "AR city."
Drawing on the team's roots in user experience design and a genuine curiosity for emerging tech, Reality Experience Design reimagined what a city mural could be. Using the Snap Lens AR platform, they transformed The Fox into a living experience: visitors scan a QR code, lift their phones, and suddenly the painted fox jumps into the real world. The digital fox runs alongside you, relaxes at your feet, and interacts with digital butterflies and clouds, blurring the boundaries between mural, memory, and magic. No longer just a mural, The Fox invites everyone to become part of the story and take home an interactive moment, reimagining what public art can mean for modern communities.
For ESAW and city organizers, the project addressed a real challenge: public art that too often goes unseen. The AR lens doesn't just amplify the mural itself; it helps locals and visitors rediscover the city's creative pulse. Here, technology isn't just a gimmick. It's a tool for bringing people together, making art accessible, and creating a collective sense of awe.
The Fox project shows that the future of art is blending the physical and digital, transforming murals into meeting points for imagination, social connection, and city pride. In Reality Experience Design CEO Christian's words, AR lets artists become "reality designers" creating new worlds for everyone to explore.
El Segundo, known for its innovation and creative risk-taking, is now leading the way for other cities to follow, with The Fox mural showing just how far a wall and a little digital magic can go.
